Using History to Make Art

An early 19th century Cape had received innumerable additions and modifications over the last century. The owners wanted to end the dangers and dysfunctions of their home.

In renovation the reincarnation of the pieces of architecture that comprise a building enriches both its provenance and aesthetic expression. The new parts were largely made of salvaged wood, whose stability and aesthetic fully complemented the reused pieces that had been saved.

Main Stair

A new safe stair replaced a scary version from 1950. The new stair does not block the front door and now has a code compliant rise/run, width, and riser gap. It was set in a new orientation in an increased opening. The old stair stringers were reused as art, and a pineapple carving was reset from the removed stair, AND Every Existing Tread, was reused set gapped for adequate width while adding new lower treads of salvaged wood. The work used steel elements per the owner’s desires.

Second Stair

Another 1950 second stair was also fully dangerous. Here, a new continuous bronze railing with wire barrier inserts between existing timbers made things safe.

Column

A column was set dead center in the middle of the home's one living room 7 feet from the fireplace opening. The existing column was relocated under the removed existing beams unified by a new steel ensemble that preserved the beam and relocated column.

Antique, New and Reused all in a coordinated attempt to preserve and extend history.
